From Here to There
Moving your household goods involves more than just getting them from one place to another. There are details to consider and many decisions to make along the way. One important decision is whether you are going to hire movers, do the moving yourself, or a combination of the two. Below are several things to consider before reaching your decision.
Hiring movers – Movers are professionals and have done this many times. They will normally require less time and take a lot of the stress out of the process. When you are choosing a mover, make sure to get several estimates to see what the different companies are like and to compare the costs. Moving companies must see your things to give you an estimate. To accurately compare estimates, be sure to tell the estimator what services you are looking for and exactly what items you will be moving. This is especially true if you are downsizing and still have items in your home that you will not be taking with you. It might be helpful to write a list of items you are planning on moving or use stickers to identify those particular items. The estimates must be in given in writing and are non-binding. Be cautious if one quote comes in much lower than the others. Remember the movers will be caring for your valuables and you need to be able to trust them.
Doing it yourself – This choice comes with the smallest price tag but may cost you in other ways. Consider the amount of time and energy it takes to pack, load a truck, unload, and unpack. Your well-being is also important. One strained muscle or missed detail could cost you much more than if you’d hired the movers initially. Even if you’ve done it before, ask yourself if this is the right decision for this move.
Packing yourself and having the movers transport – Many people choose to pack their own things and then employ movers to transport their goods. This is a great way to save money, but keep in mind that most moving companies will not accept liability for the items you have packed. If you are packing your own things, you may hire the movers to pack the more fragile or larger pieces. Make sure you allow plenty of time to pack up your home; it usual takes more time than generally calculated. In your desire to save money make sure you still use good packing materials to protect your possessions and ensure they arrive safely.
Whether you do it all yourself or ask the movers to help, your goal should be getting your possessions from here to there safely and on time.
