Take a Second Look

You’ve found your new place to live. You are excited about it. You’ve walked around in it, sat in it, and even pictured yourself living it in. You know how many bedrooms it has, if it has a porch, or if you need to use an elevator. These are all great things, but before you get ready for the big move, there are a few more facts you need to know about your wonderful new home. This information will help you decide what will fit in your new space and how your special things will be arranged. Here are some things to do:

Measure everything – Many places offer generic floor plans of the space which are a great help, but sometimes they can differ by a few inches. This small amount of space can make the difference between a furniture piece fitting or not. Invite a friend or family member to help you hold the tape measure to get accurate measurements.

Look up – Floor plans show what’s happening on the ground, but walls may jet in or ceilings slope creating less area for taller furniture pieces and for walking around.

Locate Outlets – Cable, electrical and phone outlets will influence where you place various items. The most influential one is the location of the cable outlet for your television.

Check the windows and doors – Low windows may prohibit furniture from being placed there. Note the amount of space needed to open these features and especially whether doors swing in or out.

Examine closet space – This hidden space is often forgotten about before the move. Recording storage configurations such as hanging rods, shelving, or open space will help with planning the contents to be stored here.

Take pictures – The old saying is very true – “a picture is worth a thousand words.” You may think you’ll remember all the details when you get back to your present home, but pictures will help fill in the particulars.

Collecting this information in advance will enable you to proceed with ease as you plan and prepare for your move.
